As his mouth closed around the words, he regretted them instantly. He watched her face change, as if shutters had been drawn; the line of her mouth hardened, the light behind her eyes dimmed. She recoiled from the impact of his speech.

"I'll be upstairs," she murmured, her voice raw with emotion. She turned, preparing to walk out.

"Stay here," he pleaded, "Stay."

She paused, and turned again. She walked over to the couch, tears burning her eyes, and nestled into him, knees drawn to her chest.

"I didn't mean it. I was angry. I'm sorry" he whispered.
